DIANNE SHRIMPTON - I learned to love the ocean while growing up in Nova Scotia. When we moved to British Columbia, I knew I belonged here. Every place we explored was so majestic. The mountains, the ocean, the rocks, trees, waterfalls, high country and the paths to hidden places were all spectacular. Every trip we took, I wrote about it in my journal. Then on one of our 10 day kayak trips on the outside of Vancouver Island, my sister showed me her Journals sketches. A sketch that explained in a few lines what took me a thousand words to express. Wow. And so I started to draw - rocks and trees and water in pencil and ink in my journal.
Eventually I tried to add watercolour to my black and white drawings but didn’t like them much. So with encouragement, I tried oils, I loved the flow and blend of them. And the challenge of them, who knew colour was so complex.
I have been to so many incredibly beautiful places, I want to paint them all. They really need painting.
