ELA CHOLEWA - I was born into a communist country in the 1950s and grew up in a place where the freedom to fully express who I was as a person, and what I felt about the world around me was almost non existent. Within that environment I found nature to be my refuge. I felt a sense of freedom in the silence of the sun speckled forests scattered throughout the industrial city in which I lived. When I met my husband I felt this same love of nature within him, and together, we decided that we wanted more of it. This feeling only grew stronger after we had our first daughter and soon we took the wild risk to immigrate as refugees to Canada-a country of wilderness, freedom, and unlimited opportunity. It was not an easy move; we left behind mothers, fathers, and siblings.
For many years we became preoccupied with the business of getting settled and finding comforts for our family in our new world. In this period of hard work I lost my touch with the nature. The Camera reconnected me with the freedom and peace of nature. Once I started taking pictures I could not stop because photography allowed me to see beauty in the little and sometimes unexpected moments in life. Photography is my passion: I appreciate beauty through the lens of my camera and love to share that beauty with people around me.
