MARION McCRISTALL - Artist Statement
Marion’s colourful paintings and photographs are inspired by the interplay of light, shadow, colours, shapes, and textures that are found in nature or created by man.
Having travelled to more than 40 countries on five continents and lived and worked in both Thailand and Portugal, she is influenced by the work of artisans around the globe and is drawn to their use of patterns, designs, and colours. Her travels bring back rich memories and thoughts that generate ideas for her work. Currently, her artistic expression includes intuitive, spontaneous abstract impressions in acrylic, watercolour, and pen and ink on paper and canvas. She enjoys mark making with everything from brushes and found objects with paint to oil pastels, Posca Pens, markers, and charcoal.
Photography and painting explorations go hand in hand for Marion. She is passionate about it as it satisfies a deep desire to express herself in ways that words cannot. Over the years, she has explored and experimented with a variety of art mediums and taken lessons in many styles including sketching, abstract painting, print making, and Chinese brush painting. She’s studied watercolour and acrylic painting, linocut printmaking, and clay work. Besides taking classes with artists in the Lower Mainland, she has studied painting and photography in Italy, France, Morocco, Kenya and Portugal.
Marion has lived in Langley for more than 30 years and moved to Fort Langley two years ago. She is passionate about teaching and loves helping others “see” with new eyes and capture images either in photography or in paintings that make their heart sing.
